Welcome from the Rochester Area Literacy Council's President's Newsletter 2018-19!
April 22, 2019
Dear Members of the Rochester Area Literacy Council,
As the school year winds down, we hope that you had a fun and restful spring break and are ready for this busy time of year. We are looking forward to having many of you join us tomorrow, Tuesday evening, at the Harley School for our “members’ only event.” It will be wonderful to network and learn from each other in a relaxing and fun way.
Sail into Summer May 29:
RALC will host Mary Miller at the Rochester Yacht Club and she will help us gain insights into ways to help our students think critically about media messages and discern truth in a world of fake news. Mary will review examples of how to teach these skills and how to encourage critical thinking. Please join us at this beautiful venue on May 29th. This is open to everyone, so share the flyer and invite a colleague to come along. We are looking forward to seeing you there. Find the registration flyer attached to this email.

Event -2 Spring Event – Laura Robb
RALC along with Scholastic is hosting Laura Robb at St. John Fisher College, Tuesday March 19th from 4:30-7:30pm. In your feedback forms you have asked for speakers who can talk about reading comprehension and writing instruction. Her numerous books, publications and years as an educator and speaker will ensure an evening filled with inspiration and ideas. Many were closed out of her session in 2016 when the NYSRA conference was here in Rochester, so we are expecting a big crowd for her talk. The registration flyer is attached to this email, so register early, bring a friend and be ready for an inspiring evening.

October 21, 2018
Dear RALC Members,
Welcome 2018-19
The 2018-19 academic year of the Rochester Area Literacy Council opened with two exciting Professional Development opportunities. We had more than 100 guests for Donalyn Miller at French Road on September 29th. Those attending expressed their appreciation and inspiration for Donalyn’s exciting ideas on engaging readers. On October 18th, Cheryl Dobbertin provoked us to think critically about what we read and learn from social media and the internet. Her demonstrations and discussion heightened our sense of urgency for teaching students to critically evaluate what is available on the internet.
Publishing Project
We are excited to initiate our 10th year of the Publishing Project. Children from Kindergarten through Grade 12 can submit writing pieces of various genres: fiction, non-fiction, essay, poetry, etc. for possible publication in our annual magazine. This year’s theme is Voices of Youth: Imagination, Ideas, and Innovations. Student work may be completed at home, in school or within some other group or organization. Student entries will be evaluated for personal creativity, imagination, and knowledge. A committee of local educators will review the entries using guidelines and rubrics provided on the RALC web site.
Barnes Noble Fundraiser
We are looking ahead to Saturday, November 24th to our Barnes Noble Fundraiser at Pittsford Plaza (10am-5pm). This is the second year for this event and it helps support the goals of RALC. There will be read alouds, crafts, free gift-wrapping and more. As people shop that day and mention RALC at checkout, Barnes Noble will give us a percentage of the profit for that day. We need to have a minimum of 8 volunteers in the store at any given time. We will be sending out an email with an opportunity for you to sign up to volunteer. Even an hour of your time would be greatly appreciated! Or, you may contact Michelle Heckman, our event coordinator, directly at: mheckman225@gmail,com . If you plan to shop at Barnes and Noble or at BN online, please mention RALC, so we may earn the percentage of profit. Book fair Voucher ID# 12345427. Books make great holiday gifts!

Dear RALC Members New and Old,
We would like to welcome you to another exciting year with the Rochester Area Literacy Council! As you prepare for the school year ahead, our goal is to offer you motivation and support through staff development and networking opportunities. We are certified as a CTLE Provider so your attendance at our workshops will be credit bearing.
To kick off our year, we are thrilled to announce that Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer and Reading in the Wild, will speak to our members at our first fall event on Saturday morning, September 29 at French Road School. Donalyn is an award-winning teacher, author, and staff developer, and we are proud to welcome her to Rochester.
In addition, we will host Cheryl Dobbertin on Thursday, October 18 at St. John Fisher College. Cheryl is the Director for Professional Development for Expeditionary Learning, and the author of The Common Core: Unit by Unit andTransformational Literacy. She believes in a hands-on approach for meeting classroom issues, and will share her expertise on Digital and Critical Literacy. You will not want to miss her!
In the spring, Laura Robb will join us at St. John Fisher College. Laura has been an author, teacher, and coach for over 43 years, and we are pleased to welcome her once again.
We of course will also have our annual Live Local Literacy on February 9 and Sail into Summer on May 29. Both have been traditionally popular events.
We have an exciting year planned, and hope that you will be a part of it. We encourage you to take advantage of our early-bird special and become a member for 2018-19. Your membership gives you access to our guest speakers, as well as several other events, for a discounted rate, far below any other professional development registration fees.
We have attached: group and individual membership forms, a registration flyer for our first event with Donalyn Miller and a list of membership benefits. You may also head to our web page for all the details: http://www.rochesterarealiteracycouncil.org/
Whether a new member, long lost returning member or a member renewing from last year, we welcome you and look forward to a fulfilling year.
Sincerely,
Jan and Lynne
