Dear RALC Members,
Happy Spring! We were disappointed to cancel our last PD opportunity with Dr. Jayne Lammers due to low enrollment. Yet, we recognize the challenges of our current times and the demands that have been put on everyone's time and energy. Please know that we are here for you and we are sending our members positive thoughts and praise for all that you do for students and our literacy community.
Here are important highlights to share:
Student Publishing Project - Due to COVID19, the 2019-20 Publishing Project has been extended through the 2020-21 school year. There are NEW due dates and there is the opportunity for students to receive feedback from a RALC Publishing Project Committee Member. Students have until June 1st to submit their work. In addition to writing, we are always looking for student artwork to include in the publication as well. Please visit our website HERE for all the details around the timeline for writing submissions, forms, supporting documents and committee contact information. The submission forms are also attached to this email.
Board Member Positions for the 2021-2022 Year - At our recent April Board meeting, there was much discussion around the slate of nominees since we did not have candidates for key positions (President and Vice President). All other positions with nominees were running unopposed. As a result of the discussion, we are pleased to announce that we have been able to fill positions for 2021-2022 and we are grateful for board members' continued support of the organization. Please note: Regional Representatives are appointed by the board and we can have up to 4 representatives. If you are interested in becoming a regional representative, please let us know. We have two remaining spots.
RALC Board Members for 2021-2022:
Charlotte Book Awards - This is a reminder that voting for the Charlotte Book Awards ends on April 15th. Get your votes in before it's too late! Visit - NYSRA Charlotte Awards Page for further details.
2021-2022 RALC Membership - Membership for next year is just around the corner. We have decided that next year all membership registrations will go through the NYSRA website and therefore we are simplifying the membership structure.
Here are the main details:
We wish each of you health and happiness as you move into the final quarter of the school year. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with questions and/or suggestions for ways we can support you in your literacy efforts. We value your input and stand with you in continuing to support the literacy development of our students.

Dear RALC Members,
It's hard to believe we are in the middle of the 2020-21 school year; yet here we are!! RALC sends our members love and positivity this month along with a number of important highlights related to the work of our organization.
Live Local Literacy - Our annual February event went very smoothly as an online professional learning opportunity. Kudos to all of our presenters for their amazing work and for all of our participants who spent a Saturday morning learning with us.
#Read4Luv - Our very own RALC board member, Dr. Carol St George, started the #Read4Luv campaign and it's not too late to join in the fun. Readers near and far are encouraged to share photos of the books they are reading with children - or even some of their own favorite childhood books - on social media using the hashtags #Read4Luv and #WhatIAmReading - throughout the month of February.
Student Publishing Project - Due to COVID19, the 2019-20 Publishing Project has been extended through the 2020-21 school year. Please visit our website HERE for all the details around the timeline for writing submissions, forms, supporting documents and committee contact information.
Our next PD event - March 25th from 6:00-7:30 pm - Fan-based Literacies as Playful & Powerful Pedagogy with Dr. Jayne Lammers - This event is free for members. Click on the link or attachment to access the flyer and register for this event. Invite a colleague to participate as well.
Fan-based Fiction Flyer - 3/25/21
Save the Dates - Collegial Conversations with the RALC Board - April 5th from 6-7 pm and June 7th from 6-7 pm - As these dates near, look for details on the topics addressed during these informal learning sessions with the RALC board.
Become a Board Member - It is that time of year when we collect names of interested members for RALC Board positions. If you are interested in serving on the board, please email Kathleen Olmstead ([email protected]) and Kate Yurko ([email protected]) by Friday, February 26th to express your interest. This document can provide you with information about many of the responsibilities of each position. We plan to send out our slate of nominees to membership the following week.
We wish each of you a healthy and happy second half of the school year. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with questions and/or suggestions for ways we can support you in your literacy efforts. Dear past RALC Members,
As the school year approaches please consider coming back to RALC as a member. When you become a member of RALC, you are also a member of the New York State Reading Association (NYSRA). NYSRA has a new website! Take a few minutes to view and explore the site here - https://nra.wildapricot.org/.
One of the benefits of the new website is that we can use the website to assist us in membership. This year will be a transition year so we will still accept membership forms as we have in the past (via email and/or snail mail to our PO Box). We will also be accepting membership via NYSRA's site. As usual, our current price for membership is reduced by $5 for the "early bird special" and we have a group membership that can also save you money. If you choose to go in on a group membership, please go to our RALC website at this link and follow the directions as per past practice (fill out individual membership forms, send them together via email or snail mail and include individual payments or one check/PO). For all other memberships, we recommend you go through the NYSRA site at this link.
If you need assistance with the membership renewal process on the NYSRA site, please see this video tutorial created by our Membership Chairperson, Maryanne Barret - https://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cYircXEbT8
Thank you Maryanne for creating this easy-to-follow tutorial. It makes renewing membership seamless!
We are currently in the planning process for the 2020-21 school year. Stay tuned as details of professional learning opportunities will be coming soon!
Stay safe and well,

Dear RALC Members,
As we close out another school year, there are few words to articulately capture the experiences we have been through this spring and continue to grapple with into the summer and beyond. We hope you are continuing to stay safe and well. This is no typical end-of-year newsletter; however there are many items we wish to share with you as we reflect upon 2019-2020 and move into the 2020-2021 season.
1. 2020-2021 RALC Board - We had shared our slate of officers for the 2020-2021 school year at the Live Local Literacy event in February. At that time, there were no opposed positions and we were in need of officers for some positions. After discussion at future board meetings around filling open positions and supporting one another as a board, we landed on the following -
Co-Presidents: Christine Treasure and Linda Gillette-Smith
Co-Vice Presidents: Dr. Kathleen Olmstead and Dr. Kate Yurko
Secretary: Lynne Keefer
Treasurer: Lee Ann Townsend
Membership Chair: Maryanne Barrett
Regional Representatives: Maria Katsetos, Carol St. George, Pat Martin
Thank you RALC Board Members past and present!! We couldn't do it without you!!! We appreciate your time and dedication as volunteers and recognize your commitment to our literacy community.
**Please note: We would be interested in help with social media. If anyone would like to join our board either as a regional representative or a social media chair, we would accept your participation and willingness to lead.
2. NEW NYSRA Website & Membership Renewal - NYSRA has created a new website and it is fabulous! Please take a minute to view and explore the site here - https://nra.wildapricot.org/. 3. Upcoming Professional Development - As a RALC member, you are also a NYSRA member. NYSRA is offering online PD this fall in lieu of a state conference. As a RALC/NYSRA member, you can attend this PD for free (otherwise there is a $40 fee). They currently have two virtual sessions planned -
4. Planning for 2020-2021 - Our Board is meeting this month and in August to plan more specifically for the 2020-2021 school year. We will communicate our offerings as soon as we have a calendar finalized. Of course, given the current state of things, we plan to be flexible in our scheduling/planning to align with safety guidelines and school environments. We found success in our spring virtual offerings and we know we can continue with zoom as needed. We are always looking for membership input so feel free to send us an email ([email protected]) with your thoughts and needs with regard to professional learning. In addition, in an upcoming communication we will update you on other important work of our organization - Free Little Library, Student Publishing Project, etc. Stay tuned for more and/or check out our website any time for information and updates.
We wish for you this summer the time needed to relax, rejuvenate, and reflect in order for you to prepare for the 2020-2021 school year.
